In December 2020, the workshops of Studio Hamburg Atelierbetriebs GmbH were commissioned by BEAN (Bremerhavener Entwicklungsgesellschaft Alter/Neuer Hafen mbH & Co. KG) to assist with the second extension of the German Emigration Centre in Bremerhaven.

Working closely with the Hamburg-based architectural firm Andreas Heller Architects & Designers, the exhibition spaces were brought to life. The project involved both refurbishment and new-build work in the main building, which brings the history of emigration to life for visitors, as well as the design of exhibition spaces on the theme of immigration, located in the new building. Our work included, amongst other things, wall cladding of various kinds, floor coverings, fixed and loose furniture, the integration of display cases, the creation of a patina typical of the materials used, and the production of period-appropriate props.

Particular attention was paid to ensuring that many of the structures and props corresponded in appearance to their historical models through a faithful and detailed recreation. One highlight is the reconstruction of a pub, modelled on the New York ‘Old Town Bar’, which was founded at the end of the 19th century. Despite the deliberate inclusion of signs of ageing and wear, the focus was on long-term stability and maximum ease of maintenance.

During the project, modern techniques such as 3D printing were used alongside traditional manufacturing methods. Using this technology, various props (e.g. bottles) from a historical delicatessen were reconstructed in great detail.

Another key focus of the project was media integration. For example, the integration of touchscreens, video wall monitors and RFID readers formed an integral part of our designs.

The opening took place on 26 June 2021.
