The Musical Dome in Cologne was extensively remodelled for the musical Moulin Rouge. In addition to a multitude of decorative elements on the stage, the theatrical experience is embedded in an overall staging from the outdoor advertising to the entrance area and the auditorium. Studio Hamburg Design Works was commissioned to play a leading role in all areas.

As a contribution to the outdoor advertising, a metre-high lettering was made and erected on the roof of the marquee. This is equipped with illuminants and determines the appearance of the building across the Rhine and the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge.

The simple auditorium of the functional building was transformed into a baroque theatre by the addition of balconies, elaborately ornamented balustrade sections, cornices, columns and wall panelling. The ceilings, balcony undersides and walls were decorated with high-quality fabrics, fringes, tassels and a multitude of fairy lights.
